Nicotine Gum

Nicotine gum can double your chances of stopping smoking when compared with willpower alone. It looks like normal chewing gum and contains a nicotine compound that is slowly releases nicotine into the mouth when chewed. Nicotine gum is available without a prescription and in varying strengths to help you gradually reduce your nicotine intake until you can do without it.

A piece of nicotine gum should be chewed slowly for approximately 30 minutes whenever you have the urge to smoke a cigarette. It will help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms which may occur when you first give up smoking. You still need to use willpower as nicotine gum alone may not completely remove the desire to smoke.

Nicotine gum is safe for most people who are trying to stop smoking and is available to smokers aged 18 years and over.

If you have a medical condition or are pregnant or breastfeeding you should seek advice from your GP.
